This a fraction of the 100+ pattems created for Steelcase over the last several years. Always an adventure and always enjoyable to create, patterns have been a fun addition to my more representational illustration work. They have been applied to everything from furniture to walls to building facades and have been created for various products as well as Steelcase showrooms located in Belgium, Canada, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, and all over the United States. The Metro Transit Authority (MTA) of New York City licensed these 24X36", 13 color, screen printed posters. This self-generated project was printed by Continental Identification Products which produced Steve Frykholm’s famous Herman Miller Picnic Posters. The poster series sells on Etsy.com.

I grew up a comic book fan and in many ways still am one. Inspired by those childhood days reading sci-fi comics, I created this glow-in-the-dark, 40X60" Robot Poster screen printed by David Dodde.

These gift cards are always a treat to create for Meijer. The imagery and style is varied and the holidays come a bit early each time I’ve been privileged enough to create them. Art direction by the Meijer creative team along with Chris Kuhatschek and Tammy Myers of The Distillery Project.

Want to have a good time? Gather together three friends and find an excuse to work on a project together. I had the honor of creating this flag poster along side fellow designers Brian Edlefson, Michael Nykamp and Terrance Weinzierl. The 24X36” poster series was screen printed and sells on Etsy.com. Several have been hung in art shows across the United States.

I had the pleasure of working with LaFleur Marketing to create these Michigan state parks illustrations for Hiatus packaging material.

What began as a self-generated project for my two young kids ended up earning a license agreement with the Rudolph Brand and licensed products sold on Target.com. I don’t think a bigger Rudolph fan exists and I had a lot of fun creating the art.

If you’re not familiar with ArtPrize, it’s an annual art competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It runs for about 19 days beginning in late September, and prizes are awarded based on public voting and a jury of art experts. Needless to say, it’s a great excuse to stretch some artistic muscles and paint big.

I was primarily an editorial illustrator throughout the 1990’s, working with the likes of Time Magazine, The New York Times, Harper Collins, Encyclopedia Britannica and several other publications. The subject matter was frequently gloomy which reflected my oil painting style at that time.

Creating a new style or combining mediums is something I always look forward to doing. These represent a few of those explorations. Some were created for clients, while others were for my own amusement.

I had so much fun working with The Distillery Project creating the illustrated elements to go with the kids and toy photography they provided. I could probably work my entire career on Christmas art and be a happy man.

This was a lot of fun—exploring an illustration style for KitchenAid using colored pencils and acrylic paint. Thank you to Brian Edlefson for the great art direction!

I’m honored for the opportunity to create illustrations for several Uncle Goose wooden block sets: ABC (animals), Nautical, Women Who Dared, Greek Mythology and First Pets (U.S. presidential pets). The Animal blocks have been created in dozens of languages including Danish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. Its rewarding to know these are being enjoyed by kids across the globe.

This is a small snapshot of the hundreds of people the Steelcase team and I created - and the many dozens of isometric floor plans illustrated. A big thank you to Erin, Emily, Jacob, Jen C, Jen H, Abigail, Paty, Bev, Ashley and all the unsung heroes that made all this complexity work. Whew! We did it.

The work from home craze (or should I say necessity) hit America unexpectedly in 2021. Steelcase was on top of how best to navigate all the little interruptions we freelance folks got used to years ago. People used to ask me “how do you stay focused working at home?” and now we’ve all figured out how to just that.

I had the great experience of working with Karla, the designer and owner of Siesta Silver Jewelry, who specializes in making Fordite jewelry. Fordite is a term for polished pieces of finely layered paint masses from automobile factories. The pieces illustrated here came from the Detroit auto plants and date back to the muscle car era of mid to late last century. Siesta was having a special show at the DIA, Detroit Institute of Arts, and needed art to accompany the show. Thank you for including me in on the fun, Karla!

This was a really fun project to work on. The writing is fantastic and the entire point of the piece is humor, which proved successful. Art direction by Damion Van Slyke, founder of Detergent Design.

Artwork created for Steelcase’s summer, 2018, It’s A New Day theme. The art made its debut at Neocon where Steelcase received ‘Best of Competition’ as the judges honored Steelcase for its showroom and innovative solutions for the workplace.

This is a part of the in-store experience that most people enjoy without ever knowing it is even there. The 60 foot long header runs that go above the products on the shelves. Meijer is great at making this a fun part of the shopping experience.

These are from one of three Meijer Holiday campaigns I’ve had the pleasure to work on. The art is then used for in-store displays, signage and tv and print ads. Art direction by Meijer internal creative.

A nature inspired illustration created by using spray paint and various items found in my garage including a squeegee, steel wire dipped in white paint and styrofoam.

I was responsible for creating the illustration assets for the video while the animation was created by Conduit Studio and the overall art direction by Detergent Design.

I’ve enjoyed creating over 1,000 product idea illustrations for Newell Brands including for their Dymo, Elmer’s, EXPO, FoodSaver, Graco, Mr. Sketch, Paper Mate, Rubbermaid and X-Acto lines of products.

I’ve created hundreds of these illustrations for Steelcase through the years. Technically accurate, but with an artistic aesthetic.

These playful illustrations represent “pain points” in the typical day to day lives of office workers. They are a prelude to a solution oriented product launch called Flex.

Molded plywood furniture I designed and built by layering maple veneer in hand-built molds. I was honored to be awarded design patents for two of the pieces. I really enjoy finding solutions to design problems no matter what the medium. The respective design names are: Wine Hive, Hang 12, Mirror Mirror, Step-Up and Shoe Hive.

The AIGA West Michigan, Head, Heart, Hand logo was created as a joint effort between myself and Michael Nykamp. The University Prep Academy logo was created with Detergent design. If you’ve scrolled this far down on my webpage I thought I’d give an Easter egg. Way back in 1995, my wife and I were attending a NYC church and volunteering for a non profit called HOPE Worldwide. I was known in this community as an artist and was tapped to help create an award to be given to Nelson Mandela—The HOPE Unity Award. I was given the concept and proceeded to create detailed sketches of my hand holding a bundle of sticks from top, bottom and side views. (The bundle representing unity as one stick can easily be broken, but grouped together, are nearly unbreakable). The sketches were sent off to a sculptor who then created the 3D form the bronze was cast into to make this award.

Though I cannot take credit for the final sculpture, I’m honored to have been able to be part of the process. And to think it started with simple pencil sketches of my hand in our small NYC apartment.
